These Items Can't Possibly Have Any Connection, BUT They Do.

Counter edge band damaged. 15 year old match impossible to find.

Having finally identified the laminate manufacturer, I called the local distributor who sent me directly to the manufacturer. The manufacturer had received a sample piece from me, came up with a CLOSE match. Several months of communication sent me back to the local distributor who could do nothing for me. I finally found someone 5 hours away who could get a full sheet of the close match, that I would have to come pick up. All for a mere $56.00, not to mention time, gas, and someone to cut and install it.I considered mosaic tile, but couldn't find anything that looked appropriate, and that would have meant doing the entire edging through out the kitchen. MONEY, money, money. Something I have preciously little of to spare.

This is what I had to work with. I considered Washi Tape, but after looking at it in the stores, it would not have worked as it was not substantial enough.

Walmart to the rescue... $4.97 for their Cork Duck Tape. Now if I can find a tiny (cheap) bit of paint to tint. Off to Lowe's. Much to my surprise, they offer sample jars of tintable paint for $3.98. We came close to the basic overall color.

The Duck Tape was not only wide enough, but thick enough. Tried whitewashing method. Not so good.

After applying 4 very thin coats of paint, wiping them off as much as I could, this was a pretty close match. The texture of the Cork also matched up with the matrix dots of the laminate.

The protective paper was taped to the top edge of the counter, and below, and anywhere else I thought I might clumsily spray with the adhesive. This is after the spraying on both the counter edge and the sticky side of the duck tape. It took about 2-3 minutes for it to get properly tacky. The hardest part was getting over into the furthest corner to start sticking it very carefully without attaching the strip to itself. And how does the tomato paste come into this equation, you ask? I used it to roll any bubbles out and pressure seal it. Worked great!

The only thing left to do is Mod Poge it to seal it. My contractor neighbor is amazed at my ingenuity. He is sure a home inspector will never even notice it, should I put the house up for sale. So, readers, If I, a 71 YO woman, can do this, anyone can! Just a bit of thinking outside that box.

DIY: Adding Wrought Iron Spindles

We recently had our oak spindles replaced with wrought iron ones in order to update the look of our railings. That along with a coat of paint on the bottom made a huge difference in the look and updated the whole space.
We have a lot of railing in our house. Our upstairs is open to our family room below so when you look up, you used to see an expanse of oak.
Here is the before shot.

Our contractor actually completed this project, but I watched him do it and thought I'd share the steps with you. If you have the right tools and enjoy a DIY project, you can completely do this one yourself.
Our new spindles were purchased at Lowes and we did a double barrel followed be a twist alternating them. They are the matte black look.
First step is to use a reciprocating saw to saw off the old spindles.
Screws at the bottom of the spindle should be removed.





Using liquid nail attach the shoes to the bottom and then screw them in place. Next place your new spindle in the bottom shoe and screw it in to place. The tops should fit into the existing holes pretty loosely. A second shoe is then liquid nailed and screwed into place.

















A coat of white paint on the bottom freshened up the look.
We chose to leave the balusters and top rail oak. We like the contrast of the wood with the white and I have several light oak antique pieces throughout our home that will never see paint, so it works with our eclectic look.

How to Install Heated Tile Flooring.... and Also How Not To!

We recently installed heated tile flooring in our master bathroom and I'm so glad we took on that little bit of an extra step and got it done! What a difference it makes now that the temperatures are getting cooler! Of course, not everything went completely smoothly and we definitely learned a few things along the way. A heated tile floor is such a luxury on cold winter mornings! Natural stone like this slate heats up really nicely.

The hardest part is definitely figuring out how you want to lay all of your wiring down to cover all the spaces that you want heated in your room.

These clever plastic guides hold everything in place and are really easy to use!

Laying large tiles over top of everything can be a bit tricky so these tile leveling clips really help you get a great end result!

Refurb an Inexpensive Big Lots Ottoman

I bought this little ottoman last year. Of course it didn't take long for one of my kids to rhim it. I've been trying to think of a way to fix it. And today I thought of a way! So off to Joanne's craft store I went. I knew the ottoman had good cushion, so all I really needed was fabric. And I found the perfect burlap, on sale!

Isn't this burlap absolutely perfect!?

I removed the cheap vinyl cover that was tore on the lid.

Heated up my glue gun and measured the burlap to fit tucked over the edge of the lid. Once the glue gun was heated, I wrapped the burlap onto the ottoman lid and glued the edges onto the under side. I really didn't pay attention to perfection as I figured no one but me will see that. But if I was doing this for someone else, I definitely would've put more precision in here.

Pulling the burlap as taut as possible, I hot glued it into place

I did the longer sides first and the ends I folded like a Christmas present, knowing I'd be using furniture tacks to hold the burlap more securely with the glue.

Once I glued the burlap on the way I wanted, I then placed the furniture tacks to hold it more securely and to add a bit of charm and texture. The tacks were longer than the wood so the sharp pieces went straight through. I bent them, hammered them down and put a dot of hot glue on them to prevent being poked in the future.

And the final product. I love how it turned out. I completed this project in about an hour. The burlap was on sale so that was a plus, I bought 3 years I case I decide to cover the rest of the ottoman at a later time.

Turn a Headboard Into A Menu Chalkboard

I took an old headboard, removed the slats, and created a Menu Board. Perfect for the kitchen or dining area. Bon Appetit!

DIY Paint Dipped Artwork

Okay, have you guys seen this paint dipped artwork thing before? Now I know this is a love it or hate it kind of thing, but I was at the Habitat store and I stumbled across these three perfect pieces and the idea wouldn’t leave me alone.

You probably saw them and wondered what in the world I was going to do with them if you follow me Instagram. Don’t worry, as cute as these prints looked in my Instagram photo they aren’t original paintings and they weren’t in the best of condition.

I simply spray painted the frames gold and once they were dry I taped off a 1/3 section of the paintings and sprayed them with three shades of the same color.

I was just shocked I found three pieces that fit my space…winning!!!

I like to think of it as giving new life to these forgotten pieces. And I’m feeling kind of bold right now so I’m giving it a thumbs up!

Autumn Felt Pom Poms

When I made these, I was looking for a simple project that would add big impact to my Thanksgiving tablescape. I think these fit the bill!

To make these you'll need:
1 yard of felt each in 3 different colors
several hundred pins (I had a box of 500, but I did not use them all!)
(3) 4 styrofoam balls
Sizzix Big Shot with Flower Layers #11 or 2 circle die, or scissors





I used my Sizzix Big Shot and my Flower Layers #11 die and cut out a LOT of approximately 2 flowers.
First you will want to cut your felt into either flowers or circles. You can really do this quite quickly with a good pair of fabric shears too! Just make one circle template and you will be able to cut a couple layers of felt at one time with nice scissors. These do NOT have to be perfect.





Next you will fold your circles / flowers in half, and then in half again. Then pin the bottom corner of felt into the sytrofoam ball. Repeat until your entire styrofoam ball is covered in felt.





That's it! It's super easy, but takes a little time so maybe watch a favorite TV show while you work.

How To Make A Pumpkin Pie Candle In A Jar

What's better than making cute jar candles? Making cute jar candles that smell like pumpkin pie! We think fall and candles are the perfect pair. And we do so much visiting over the holidays, we decided to make these jar candles to give as hostess gifts.

We've made so many container candles, we have lots of tips and tricks to share. Here's how to make this darling Pumpkin Pie Candle In A Jar.






The first step is to pick out a container. You can go to the craft store and buy a fancy one, but look how cute ours turned out. And it is recycled! We save lots of jars, so our first step was to raid our jar stash. We picked out one that is shaped like a pumpkin!






You'll need to wick your container. The most important thing is to center the wick. That way the candle will burn straight down the center. (We have a video on our blog showing how to do this! http://runningwithsisters.com/pumpkin-pie-candle-jar/)






Then you melt the wax on the stove. We always use a candle thermometer so we don't get the wax too hot. (It's flammable!)






To scent the wax, we use candle scent or fragrance oil. And the color comes from candle dye blocks. They are waxy and melt right into the wax. (You can't use food coloring because it is water based.)






Then you pour the melted wax into your jar. Let it cool. Then remove the pencil and trim the wick. If you want to label your jar, we have a printable label on the blog at http://runningwithsisters.com/pumpkin-pie-candle-jar/. We think it makes such a nice handmade gift!

Decorate With Mossy Tape #diylikeaboss

Hello there Sweets, it's time for our monthly DIY blogger challenge again.
Here is how it works: Each month we have a different project challenge to come up with.
This month we had to make something using DUCT or HVAC TAPE

And here we are ready for our "October Challenge"
where 7 of us DIYer's are creating some serious stuff!!!!





Here is my little project, so instead of covering something in decorative tape, I decided to cover the tape itself...
In MOSS....oh yes, I love Moss!!!! I decorated some candles in a mossy chevron pattern





And I also dressed up a mason jar with a cute moss heart





I put it all on a plate, creating a MOSSY and
NATURE Inspired vignette





I am displaying my pretty tray on our new kitchen nook table





Oh yes, we just got ourselves a new kitchen nook table
(insert smiley face here), but more on the table
in a different post soon!





Here is a quick & easy "HOW TO"
on the "Mossy Tape"
All you need is a package of sheet moss, some double sided tape
(I could not find the double sided DUCT tape in 4 stores, so I used
double sided Scotch Tape instead)





I cut the tape in half (lengthwise) and cut up pieces
of sheet moss to stick onto it.
(Note: the tape is clear, the red part you see in the below
picture peels off)





Both the chevron pattern and the heart were super easy, but the
possibilities of shapes you can make are endless! I am already
thinking about making a mossy Easter Bunny in the spring, or stars
for Christmas, etc... you can let your imagination take you away!





Ohhh, I had this old boring tray in the garage, so I gave it a quick
make over with some "Annie Sloan French Linen" paint, the
perfect find for my little project





I love the color combination of the grey plate
and the moss!!!!!
