When I came across this Eastlake on CL for free, the condition didn't concern me. I knew I could bring it back to life. I also knew that it wouldn't get painted. They only made these Knapp jointed pieces from 1870-1890's. Most would see the missing wood on the top, huge gouges and discoloration & paint it. The longer I refinish piece the more I learn to embrace the flaws. The flaws to me shows the character of the piece. It makes me wonder where its been & who used to put their belongings in it. So embrace the flaws!
Love a Before, During & After pics!
As you can see, he's been through hell!
I sanded him completely down & did my favorite wood conditioner mix: 50/50 Shellac/D-natured Alcohol. Sometimes I leave it with just the 50/50 but for this one I wanted a shade darker.
So I grabbed some Wise Owl glaze in Black Walnut.
I painted it on & then with a dry brush feathered it out.
Look at that grain!
Sanded, 50/50 mix & glaze also over those GORGEOUS Knapp joints!
And here he is in all his glory! He's ready to take on another 125 yrs!
Restorations are so much more work than painting that's for sure but I love doing both! Check out my work at FB Rehab to Fab by clicking the link below.
